While I was in the Navy, I attended a motivational speech given by
General Colin L. Powell. He handed out a card with the first thirteen rules
on it. He said that he had collected the 13 rules during his career in the
military and felt that they served him well. With his tour as Secretary
of State at a close and still the potential for even more greatness, I guess they work.
Thirteen years after I received them, I still make a point of reading them and trying to incorporate them
into my daily life. Number 14 is my addition to
these fine rules. Enjoy...

- It ain’t as bad as you think. It
will look better in the morning.
- Get mad, then get over it.
- Avoid having your ego so close to
your position that, when your position falls, your ego goes with it.
- It can be done!
- Be careful what you choose. You may
get it.
- Don’t let adverse facts stand in
the way of a good decision.
- You can’t make someone else’s
choices. You shouldn’t let someone else make yours.
- Check small things.
- Share credit.
- Remain calm. Be kind.
- Have a vision. Be demanding.
- Don’t take counsel of your fears or
naysayers.
- Perpetual optimism is a force
multiplier.
